2007) Ted Musgrave raced the No. 9 Team ASE Toyota to a third-place
finish in Saturday’s Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers Ram Tough 200
at Gateway International Raceway. After starting near the middle of
the 36-truck starting grid, Musgrave steadily worked his way to the
front and recorded his second third-place finish of the season. It
was Musgrave’s eleventh top-ten finish in 16 starts, and his sixth
top-five run of the year. “We were going to be fourth but David Green lost a tire at the end and that gave us third,” Musgrave said, speaking of Green’s misfortunes within the final five laps. “We weren’t a winning truck today, but we were plenty fast and we used good pit strategy. I knew from practice that this truck would be really tight in practice and we had to drive through there carefully and run a little different pit strategy. The Team ASE Toyota was really good, but we need to get a little stronger.” Musgrave has had previous success at Gateway, and is the only driver to score more than one NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series win at the uniquely shaped 1.25-mile oval. But in an effort to step up and become the track’s first three-time winner, Musgrave and his Rick Gay-led team tried a different setup this time around. “Sometimes it’s better to try a little different setup like that at a place you know well and have had a little bit of success,” Musgrave said. “We tried a coil bind setup all day on Friday until the very end and it was better. This racetrack is a 50-50 deal, but a lot of the racetracks we go to, it is going to be the way to go. We need to perfect it.” With seven more races on the schedule, Musgrave is confident his team will find its way to victory lane at least once before the season ends. “We’d like to come out and dominate one of them like we did here in 2005,” Musgrave said, referring to his last win at Gateway when he led 158 of the race’s 160 laps. “That’s what we are trying to do every day. I love New Hampshire and run well there, and we were second last year at Las Vegas too. Every one of the racetracks that I kind of dread going to are already behind us. We’re going to try to do everything we possibly can to get up into the top five (in driver points) before the end of the year.” Musgrave currently sits seventh in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship standings with 2122 points. He sits 204 points behind sixth-place Rick Crawford and another 23 points behind fifth-place Johnny Benson. Next up for Musgrave and the Germain Racing No. 9 Team ASE Toyota is the New Hampshire 200 at the New Hampshire International Speedway. The 18th race of the 2007 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season is slated for a 3 P.M. Eastern start, and will be shown live on SPEED.
