Musgrave has tasted success at Dover International Speedway, but
found frustration in his search for his first win of the 2007 NASCAR
Craftsman Truck Series season. Hopes were high entering Friday
evening’s AAA Insurance 200. Musgrave previously had picked up one
of his 20 career Cup Series top-five finishes at the Monster Mile,
and scored an impressive Truck Series win at the lightning quick
concrete oval in 2002 as well. But those hopes took a serious hit when a problem on the right front corner of the Germain Racing Team’s primary No. 9 Team ASE Toyota send Musgrave into the turn one wall in the waning moments of final practice on Thursday. The resultant damage forced the team to a backup truck, and since the accident happened in the final moments of practice that meant Musgrave would have to race a truck that had no laps on it other than the two laps he would turn in qualifying. “I went down into the corner and the truck went straight up and into the wall,” Musgrave said. “We had the right front shock come loose and it cut down the right front tire. It was a hard hit. That truck was destroyed. It’s going to be a show truck from here on out.” While the crew worked hard to prepare the backup truck and make it as close to the primary truck as possible, Musgrave qualified 30th early Friday morning and, even though he was able to advance through the field, Musgrave and the No. 9 Team ASE Toyota ended the day in 20th. “The crash in practice just started the whole weekend snowballing,” Musgrave said. “The guys tried to get the backup truck as close as they could for the race, but the truck was just way too tight all day long. We even tried to change springs on one of the pit stops but we just couldn’t get it where we wanted. I kept thinking about what we could do to stay on the lead lap, but once we were a lap down there really wasn’t much we could do.” Although the finish was obviously not what the team was hoping for, the top-20 run kept Musgrave in the top five in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship standings. On the strength of three top-five finishes and six top-10 runs, Musgrave stays fourth in the standings, 241 points behind leader Mike Skinner and just 45 points behind his Germain Racing teammate Todd Bodine in the battle for the third position. The next race for Musgrave and the Germain Racing No. 9 Team ASE Toyota is the O’Reilly Auto Parts 400 at Texas Motor Speedway on June 8. The ninth race of the 2007 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season is slated for a 9 P.M. Eastern start, and will be televised live on SPEED.
