Musgrave scored a fifth-place finish in Friday night’s Quaker Steak
and Lube 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Lowe’s Motor
Speedway. Musgrave experienced an unexpected handling issue in
qualifying that forced the No. 9 Team ASE Toyota to come from 29th
position on the grid, but the 2005 series champion quickly knifed
his way through the field. By lap 40 Musgrave broke into the top twenty, and with a strong pit stop under caution to move into the top five at lap 50. With divergent pit strategies under later cautions, Musgrave would drop back to 15th with 50 laps to go, but a fast truck allowed Musgrave to work his way back towards the front. Musgrave was able to take advantage of a jumble on the final restart with two laps to go to gain a couple of positions to record his second top five finish of the season. “We were pretty lucky,” Musgrave said. The truck was pretty decent but this track is so difficult and the tires are so hard that if you get back in traffic and lose any of your aerodynamics on the front you’re just going to slide and it makes for boring racing. You have to search for different groove to get some air on the nose, and that’s what I did. It’s just hard work. We dug in deep and brought the Team ASE truck home in the top five, and that’s what we wanted to do.” While Musgrave was strong, he didn’t have enough to catch race winner Ron Hornaday. “I wish I knew what they were doing tonight because if we did, we would run it too,” Musgrave joked. “When I got behind him on that one restart, I tried my hardest to stay with him and he just drove away from us. I knew if he didn’t have any problems that he’d be tough to beat. Hats off to those guys; they found a combination that works really well, so congratulations to those guys.” With his fourth top ten finish of the season, stays sixth in NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship standings. Musgrave is 178 points behind leader Mike Skinner, and just seven points behind Jack Sprague for the fifth position. “We need to keep moving forward,” Musgrave said. “We had a bit of a problem at Kansas otherwise we might be a little closer to the front. But everyone on this team is working together and going in the right direction. We keep doing that and we’ll get in position to run for a championship.” The next event for Musgrave and the No. 9 Team ASE Toyota is the Ohio 250 at Mansfield Motorsports Park on Saturday May 26. The race is scheduled for a 1 pm Eastern start, and will be televised nationally on Fox Sports.
