Former NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion Ted Musgrave has had
some success in the past at Bristol Motor Speedway, but the newly
resurfaced and reconfigured track left the Germain Racing No. 9 Team
ASE Toyota beaten and battered. After a couple of on-track incidents
during Wednesday’s O’Reilly 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race
left the truck damaged beyond repair, Musgrave pulled into the
garage area after completing 158 laps resulting in a 27th-place
finish. Musgrave was forced to start near the back of the field, but started to move forward from his 30th starting position at the drop of the green flag. But before he could clear traffic and make any headway on racing towards the top ten, drivers racing around him came together and slammed into him causing some body damage to the right rear fender. That damage eventually cut down the right rear tire, forcing an unscheduled pit stop on lap 25. The green flag stop cost Musgrave four laps to the leaders and essentially put him out of contention. Looking to the future while trying to make as many laps as they could, Musgrave and his Rick Gay-led crew decided to make changes to the setup of the No. 9 Team ASE Toyota and use the remainder of the race as a test session. But Bristol again jumped up and bit. This time Musgrave was again in the wrong place at the wrong time as Dennis Setzer had a tire go down entering turns one and two just as Musgrave was swinging to the outside to pass. Setzer’s truck shot up the banking and smacked into Musgrave in the driver’s side sending him on a wild spin off turn two. The damage finally forced Musgrave to call it a night, leaving him with only his second finish outside the top-20 in 2007. “It was just a very long and frustrating night for the Team ASE Tundra,” Musgrave said. “After we lost that tire in the early going we decided we’d make some changes and maybe use the rest of the race as a test session and try to learn some things. We changed some shocks and other things and seemed to actually make the truck a little better. We were way too far down the order to make up any real ground, but we certainly didn’t want to get taken out like that either but that’s racing I guess.” Musgrave now stands eighth in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship standings. He has ten top-10 finishes in 15 starts and sits 70 points behind Jack Sprague for the seventh position. In the owner points standings, Musgrave’s owner Bob Germain sits 82 points behind Bill Davis Racing’s No. 23 and 119 points behind Circle Bar Racing’s No. 14 for fifth. Next up for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is the Dodge Ram Tough 200 at Gateway International Raceway. Musgrave will look to repeat his win in 2005 when the field takes the green flag at 5:30 P.M. Eastern on Saturday September 1.
