No. 2 Team ASE/CARQUEST Dodge Craftsman Truck Series No. 1 Mopar Dodge Craftsman Truck Series No. 7 Sirius Dodge Winston Cup Series BIRTH DATE: March 28, 1947 HOMETOWN: Alta Dena, CA RESIDENCE: Orange, CA CHILDREN: Cody and Melissa Whether at the race track, or at his company’s headquarters in Buena Park, California, Jim Smith is best described as tireless. “I have never been one to sit around much. Life is full of challenges and I thrive on meeting every one of them,” Smith states. Smith has proven he has the talent to be master of both business and racing. Beginning in 1984, he led his team of dedicated employees in positioning Ultra Wheel Company as the one of the world’s largest wheel manufacturers in just eight years. The company has continued to experience more growth in the past few years than ever before. In 1991, he was the SCORE/HDRA Class 1 Champion and True Grit Award recipient, an honor given to the driver covering all the racing miles at the fastest average speed. Named as Off-Roadsman Of The Year, winning the world renowned SCORE Baja 1000 and finishing second in the season standings made 1994 a memorable year. He also can claim the class wins of the 1999 Baja 1000 and the most demanding race of all, the 2000 Baja 2000. In total Smith has six wins in the Baja 1000. It was along with fellow off road racers that Smith commissioned the first NASCAR SuperTruck prototype. The off-roaders showcased the SuperTruck in the Circle Track Show at the 1994 Daytona 500. The new truck was so well received within the racing fraternity that NASCAR quickly picked up the series. The rest is now history, and Smith is the only team owner who can claim wins in every year since the inception of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. In addition to running his own NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team and Winston Cup Team, he also sponsors other top rated contenders in other auto racing series. When Smith is not at the helm of his business or on the racetrack, he can be found enjoying time with his son Cody, daughter Melissa and close friends. |
